Cathedral Arts Spring 2012 Evening/Weekend Series

Sunday, April 15, 4:00 p.m.  Songs of Ecstasy

Counterpoint, Nathaniel G. Lew, Conductor

The twelve unaccompanied voices of the Counterpoint ensemble return to St. Paul's with an exhilarating and varied survey of sacred choruses spanning five centuries.  The program includes Latin motets from the Song of Songs by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, choral concertos in Church Slavonic by Dmitri Bortiasky, German motets by Johannes Brahms, sparkling Latin motets by Francis Poulenc, and Gwyneth Walker's setting of mystical texts by American Trappist monk Thomas Merton.

Sunday, May 13, 4:00 p.m.  The Harmonious Mr. Handel

The Oriana Singers, William Metcalfe, Conductor

In a concert highlighting the genius of Handel, the Oriana Singers perform a Chandos Anthem in the English "oratorio" style, a Coronation Anthem in the mature Handel's special-occasion style, a Vespers choral work in Handel's youthful Italian style and a favorite Concerto Grosso.  Scott Metcalfe leads the orchestra, with period instruments.

Friday, May 18, 7:30 p.m.  Youthful Passion and Fantasy

Matthew Manwarren, piano

Brahms composed one of his most important works, the monumental F Minor Sonata, at the youthful age of 21.  Manwarren will perform this passionate masterwork along with Mozart's dramatic C Minor Fantasy, Three Songs without Words by Mendelssohn and Three Etudes for Piano dedicated to the performer by American composer Leonard Mark Lewis.

Saturday, May 19, 9:30-Noon  Piano Master Class with Matthew Manwarren

Hear gifted pianists and observe world-class instruction.  Co-sponsored by Cathedral Arts and Greenfield Piano Associates.

Sunday, June 10, 4:00 p.m.  An American Idyll

Gail Archer, organ

This concert celebrates the beautiful folk melodies, American hymn tunes and powerful sounds that infuse American organ music.  A dynamic fusion of folk tunes, hymns, jazz, blues and European art music reflect the remarkable diversity of our nation, from great urban centers to mountains and plains.

Friday, June 1, 7:30 p.m.  Musical Moods:  Poetry, Fire and Humor

Greenfield Piano Associates

This annual concert, performed by members of Greenfield Piano Associates, features a variety of piano works evoking a broad range of moods, from deeply lyrical to wildly exciting to zany.  Music by Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Faure, Prokofiev, Bartok, Bernstein and Ginastera.

Admission by donation to GPA Scholarship Fund.


Seniors = 65+   Students = under 22 with ID    Children = under 15

Tuesdays Noon to One Series

Tuesday Noon concerts are free.  Bring a bag lunch; coffee and tea provided.

April 17 - Winds Take Flight.  The Heliand Consort

Berta Frank, flute; Katie Oprea, oboe; and Elisabeth LeBlanc, clarinet.  The trio welcomes spring with Beethoven's Trio in C Major, Opus 87, and trios by Bach, Mozart and British composer, Malcolm Arnold.

May 1 - Light and Fancy.  Merryn Rutledge, soprano; Martin Poppe, tenor; Annemieke Spoelstra, piano

Lighthearted word play, tonal pictures and elegant lover scenes lace these songs and arias by Cavalli, Mozart, Chausson, Faure, Copeland, Walker and Hoiby.

May 15 - Trombone Quartet.  The Lake Champlain Trombone Quartet.

Lori Salimando, Dan Silverman, Randy Wheeler, Bob Witness.  Arrangements, transcriptions and original music for trombone quartet from Renaissance to the present, including both jazz and classical styles.

May 29 - Violin and Cello Music from the Baroque to Modern

Laura Markowitz, violin; and John Dunlop, cello.  Violin and cello music of Bach, Telemann, Boisortier, Martinu and Bartok.

June 5 - Missa Luba and New Prayers from the Ark.

Syrinx.  A program of A Cappella choral music featuring the Congolese-style Missa Luba, with percussion, and the premiere of eight new Prayers from the Ark by Glenn Sproul.
