2011 ECVA-VT Show The 2011 ECVA-VT show went 'on the road,' as it were, having the show exhibited in three parishes, making it easy for even more talented Episcopal artists to be part of this great experience. In June, July and August, 1/3 of the show was mounted in each location for a month, then the show rotated with a 'new' 1/3 of the show being exhibited in each location, and rotated again in August. St. Paul's hosted part of the show, being joined by Immanuel, Bellows Falls. Each venue has an established Arts Ministry and was excited by this new venture. A third site, St. Andrew's, St. Johnsbury, joined the group and was delighted to offer its space for the exhibit. This year's theme was "A Reverence for Trees." We all think of trees as living beings, part of God's vast creation, especially close to our hearts here in Vermont. But trees are even more: they are shelter, they are building material, they are toys and sporting equipment; they provide food; they are places of community (whether for birds & animals or when offering sign of a life-sustaining spring in the desert); they symbolize everlasting life (evergreens are often planted in cemeteries, for example); they have been cleared from the land and re-planted in the land (tree-planting ceremonies are often part of visioning a pleasant and profitable future); some trees live for thousands of years, speaking slowly and wisely of the comings and goings of human-kind; and wood from a tree was made into the Cross of the Crucifixion.
History of ECVA-VT We began in the fall of 2006 with a group of interested artists and art advocates, working to found a local chapter of the national on-line organization. Our inaugural exhibit was in the spring of 2007; Ruth Councell, one of the founders of ECVA, came to address the Opening Reception. Annual exhibits have been mounted each year since; workshops for interested sub-groups were also organized.
Membership in ECVA-VT is open to artists and associates living and working in Episcopal communities throughout the Diocese of Vermont. Annual membership dues are $25, and payments may be sent to ECVA-VT, care of St. Paul's Cathedral, 2 Cherry Street, Burlington, VT 05401. While all participating artists/associates are encouraged to support ECVA-VT with an annual donation, no one is prevented from exhibiting due to financial hardship.
It is our on-going mission to join artists from across Vermont in celebrating our common life in the faith communities of our wonderful and diverse Episcopal Church. We seek to share our gifts, collaborate with others and enrich our spiritual lives through expressions in the visual arts.
