Introducing Our New Rector
It is with great confidence in and deep appreciation for the work of the Ministry Discernment Committee (MDC) that your Vestry is pleased and excited to announce the calling of Rev. Greta Getlein (pronounced Get-line) as our new Rector. While we are already feeling her holy spirit coming upon us, we look forward with great anticipation to having Rev. Getlein and her spouse, Wanda Strickland, join us physically with her first day in the CCSP offices on May 4 then celebrating and preaching at both services on the following Sunday, May 10 Mother’s Day. Please plan to attend and welcome them personally.
While she and I have had several phone conversations, I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting Greta personally. A review of her resume is most impressive: 3 years as a hospital RN; 7 years as a Hospice RN, 9 years in nursing administration; time as a professional singer; Master of Divinity from Berkeley Divinity School at Yale; 4 years as Director of Anglican Studies and Formation & Associate Dean at Berkeley while also servicing as Curate and Pastoral Care Associate at Christ Church New Haven; and 6 years as Vicar of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Pawtucket, RI. Perhaps even more important to us are the strengths she has chosen to share with us through her credentials: liturgical planning and leadership; presiding and preaching; monthly kids Sunday; mentoring clergy in training; monthly healing service; casual summer services; service of sung compline; sung Solemn High Mass; and Chapel on-the-green, a weekly outdoor Ecumenical worship service.
However, what has moved me most is her letter of introduction covering her portfolio submission:
“I believe that the gifts I bring and the stated needs of this parish cathedral are well suited to one another. I have a wealth of experience in planning and executing traditional and non-traditional liturgies in all sorts of spaces and all sorts of configurations; I am told I am a good preacher (this is hard to assess honestly in one’s self); I love the pastoral care part of being a priest and am gifted at it; I have very strong administration skills; I am a musician and have experience with the Royal School of Church Music having served as chaplain for the Newport RI summer course for four years; I have a healthy sense of humor; and I Love Jesus.”
Feels to me like we are totally meant to worship and grow together!!! Let’s all get started.
