Cathedral Sexton

Anthony Galas was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and he moved to Burlington in 1989 to marry his pen pal. Tony began working at St. Paul's Cathedral in January of 1990. Among the loves of his life are his wife Joyce, his family and friends, and the staff and parishioners of St. Paul’s. He also enjoys Tai Chi and jumping into Lake Champlain every February to raise money for Burlington’s Penguin Plunge to benefit Special Olympics Vermont.

Anthony says, “One of the areas of my work at St. Paul’s about which I am most passionate and proud is our growing volunteer program. Over the past few years we have developed strong relationships with the departments of Probation & Parole and Court Diversion, with ReSource, and with several schools and colleges. This is on top of a sturdy foundation of faithful parishioner volunteers. From the generosity of these groups and individuals St. Paul’s has received close to 1000 hours of volunteer service in 2011-12.

“I absolutely love bringing these people into our building and telling them about the wonderful services, events, concerts and programs that happen within these walls. And then, with their help, we vacuum, sweep, dust, mop and clean to make the Cathedral beautiful and welcoming to all its parishioners and visitors.

“When I began this job in 1990 it was because I needed to work and earn a living. It has evolved into something that feels much more profound. My work here feels like a ministry.”
