Lay Participants

Lay participants are the lay leaders for the Sunday liturgy at St. Paul's, for weekday services such as the Wednesday healing service, and for special services such as Evensong.  All who are interested in volunteering to assist in leading the liturgy should contact the Lay Participant Coordinator.  Monthly schedules are posted to the right in PDF format, along with a link to "Preparing for Sunday", which will change each week to the readings for the following Sunday.

The Coordinator is Sarah Urang (s_ldyke@yahoo.com), assisted by Alice Winn (awinn9852@aol.com).  Estelle Deane (estelledeane@gmail.com) is the contact for Vergers and Eucharistic Ministers, Alice Winn oversees the Lectors and Intercessors, and Stan Baker (sbaker@stpaulscathedralvt.org) heads up the Acolytes and Crucifers.  Pat Wheeler (wwheeler@accessvt.com) is chair of the Flower Guild.

Acolytes lead the procession with cross and torches, take part in the gospel procession, and help out during the service by bringing water, lavabo bowl, etc., to the presider at the altar.  Acolytes may be youth or adult, and may serve at the 9 or 11 o'clock services.

Lectors/Intercessors read the lessons (Old Testament and Epistle) and lead the Prayers of the People at each of the Sunday services.

The Eucharistic Minister is one of the three sacred ministers at the altar (with the presider and deacon) during the 11 o'clock service.  He or she assists the presider and deacon at the altar, hold the hospel book for the deacon and administer the chalice at Communion.

Vergers are the "masters of ceremony." They set up the chancel for the service, direct the processions, give cues and watch for problems, and administer the chalice at Communion when needed.

The Altar Guild cares for the silver and vestments.  Two or three members, rotating each month, wash up after services, and all work together to polish the silver and prepare the chancel before Christmas and Easter.

The Flower Guild creates the flower arrangements for church each week, and for special occasions.

Ushers welcome people to St. Paul's, hand out bulletins and assist people to their seats.  They also assist with various parts of the service (offertory and communion).

Greeters welcome people to St. Paul's, offer hospitality and provide information to newcomers.
