Customary for Baptism
Holy Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ’s Body the Church. Because in the rite for Holy Baptism, a congregation is asked to commit to supporting the person being baptized in their life in Christ, it is important for the person being baptized to be attending the church and known to the congregation. In the case of a child being baptized, the parent(s) (or the grandparents) should be active members of the congregation. The Episcopal Church welcomes people of all ages to be baptized.
If it is a child that will be baptized, the child and the parents are required to meet with the Dean at least twice prior to the baptism (usually a few weeks apart). Then the parents, child and sponsors need to come for a rehearsal a few days prior to the baptism. If the sponsors cannot be at the rehearsal because of travel schedules, the parents are responsible for reviewing the service with the sponsors so they are prepared on the day of the baptism.
For adults being baptized, they will need to meet with the priest at least twice, as well as attend a rehearsal a few days prior to the Baptism.
Baptisms are only offered in the context of the Holy Eucharist, usually on one of the major feast days (Easter, Ascension, Day of Pentecost, Trinity Sunday, All Saints Day, Christmas Day or The Epiphany) though some other Sundays are permissible.
