Customary for Weddings
A Christian wedding is an affirmation of a couple’s commitment to each other and to God through Jesus Christ. The couple asks for God’s blessing on their life together and their promised love and faithfulness. If you choose to be married at St. Paul’s, we look forward to working with you to plan a ceremony that celebrates the joy and love you have for each other and for God.
At least one of the couple must be an active member of the parish or the child of an active member. To be considered an active member, a person must have contributed to the financial support of the parish, and attended Sunday services with regularity, for a period of at least one year. Non-members who are active members (by the same definition) of other Episcopal or ELCA churches may inquire about the possibility of celebrating a marriage at St. Paul’s.
Because of the seriousness of the marriage commitment, the Episcopal Church requires that a couple be given instruction before the marriage. During this instruction, the priest will guide the couple through a careful exploration of important aspects of a marital relationship. The length and nature of the instruction will reflect the uniqueness of each individual couple, and it is intended to be useful and enjoyable.
At least 90 days’ notice is required to schedule a wedding here, so please plan to begin the process early. A wedding cannot be put on the calendar until after the first meeting with the Dean, and with the Dean’s approval. Weddings may not be scheduled during the season of Lent or during holiday weekends.
Arrangements for rehearsals, music, flowers, and other decorations must also be made by working with the Dean and/or Organist. The order of service for weddings will be “The Celebration and Blessing of a Marriage,” from The Book of Common Prayer, modified as appropriate and necessary for same-gender ceremonies.
