Cathedral Choirs

Adult Choir
The Cathedral Choir of adults is composed of 25 to 30 singers who gather weekly on Thursday evenings from 6:45 to 8:45 to practice for the 10:00 a.m. Sunday Eucharist. This dedicated group of musicians sings on Sunday mornings September through May, as well as offering music at occasional concerts, the services of Holy Week, and an annual service of Lessons and Carols in Advent. It's joyful work and they are a devoted and loving musical community, who bring a strong sense of the glory of God to the Cathedral's worship life.

Cathedral Choristers
The youth choir program at the Cathedral provides a comprehensive training program for young singers, affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM). Choristers receive a stipend for their dedicated participation, based on their level of achievement and progress. Choristers are part of a centuries-old tradition of children singing the top line of inter-generational choral music - the way Bach, Handel, Mozart and so many other composers first heard their music performed. Choristers sing three Sundays a month at Cathedral services (9 a.m. rehearsal for a 10 a.m. service), and have regular concert opportunities such as performing in the Cathedral Arts concert series and with Vermont Choral Union with Orchestra. The chorister program offers music education and a welcome for all, regardless of religious affiliation or no affiliation.

Children begin as Novices in grade 2 or 3. They practice one afternoon a week for half an hour, learning basic concepts of rhythm, pitch and "choircraft."
Choristers, ages 8 through 15, practice for two hours each Thursday during the program year with a half hour break for a provided dinner (total, 5:15 to 7:45 p.m.). In addition, each chorister has a 20-minute one-on-one tutorial (Wednesday or Friday, also possible remotely), monitored by a family member, to work toward a light-blue, dark-blue, red, or gold ribbon in the RSCM Chorister Training Program. The Choristers focus on sight singing, vocal skills, ear training, and musical leadership in worship. One hour of their Thursday practice, following dinner, is in conjunction with the Adult Choir practice. Graduated choristers sometimes continue singing in the Adult Choir.
