LITURGICAL MINISTERS

Picture

Liturgical Ministers

What are the lay roles available for those who would like to participate in our worship services at St. Paul's?  Learn more about Crucifers, Lay Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Thurifers, Ushers, and Vergers.

For more information, please contact the Cathedral Administrator at admin@stpaulscathedralvt.org.

Crucifers

A crucifer (from Latin, meaning "cross-bearer") is a person appointed to carry the church's processional cross during processions at the beginning and end of the service.

For more information, please contact the Rev. Deacon Stan Baker at sbaker@stpaulscathedralvt.org.

Subdeacons

Subdeacons are lay people licensed by the bishop to administer the consecrated bread and wine of the Eucharist. They may also be licensed to go from a celebration of the Eucharist to share the sacrament with members of the congregation who were unable to be present at the celebration because of illness or infirmity.

For more information, please contact Margie Schacht via the Cathedral Adminstrator at
admin@stpaulscathedralvt.org.

Lectors

Lectors, or readers, are lay people appointed by the clergy to read lessons or the prayers of the people.

For more information, please contact Mark Howe at mhowe@stpaulscathedralvt.org.

Thurifers

The thurifer is the server or acolyte who carries and swings the thurible, in which incense is burned during the eucharist and other liturgies. The thurifer or other ministers may use the thurible in the ceremonial censing of people or objects such as the gospel book or altar.

For more information, please contact John Montross via the Cathedral Administrator at
admin@stpaulscathedralvt.org.

Ushers

A church usher is a person who helps ensure a smoothly running church service and who ministers to people in a variety of practical ways. Their duties usually include greeting people as they arrive for the service, assisting people with special needs, and collecting the offering.

For more information, please contact Tom Rees via the Cathedral Administrator at admin@stpaulscathedralvt.org.

Vergers

Vergers are the "masters of ceremony." They set up the chancel for the service, direct the processions, give cues and watch for problems, and administer the chalice at Communion when needed.

For more information, please contact Tom Rees via the Cathedral Administrator at
admin@stpaulscathedralvt.org.
